The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is one the more famous poems written by Eliot and it is a remarkable work since it seems to simply describe what the character of Prufrock is thinking. While it is supposed to be a love song, it does not contain much about love itself but more the sad condition which Prufrock feels for himself and for others around him. His thoughts are certainly tangled since he jumps from topic to topic and even returns to some subjects but does not elaborate upon them. In effect, the reader is given an image of sadness rather than poetic love.

For example, the beginning of the poem is rather interesting since Prufrock seems to be taking someone somewhere but there is no real action in this journey. The evening is dull, the path half deserted and the journey itself is as tedious as a boring argument. The poem then diverges to a yellow fog which could be taken as the raving of age or disease that come with time to every house and everything that exists in the world. However, while the poem acknowledges that time is passing by, it also shows how there will be enough time for everything.

This is shown how we have time to make revisions, decisions, changes and even time to create and destroy all before the evening comes. Prufrock then changes the discussion towards what women do and what he can do to make himself more attractive to them. He also notes that he is showing signs of aging since he has a bald spot but his clothes and his fashionable accessories might make him look younger. Despite this disguise, he knows internally that he is no longer an attractive man and the women around him know that.
