It is a simple fact that for all children of the country, regardless of their mental of physical disability, secondary school education is essential. However, effective secondary school programs for students with MR need to observe certain criteria to ensure that all the needs of the children are met. These include looking after their academic skills, transition to the work environment, employment seeking opportunities and their transition out of school (ESSCSS, 2008). Further, as discussed by Abery et. al. (1995) secondary school programs also have to develop the adaptive skills of children which they would need to be useful members of society once they have left school.

One of the best examples of such a program comes from The Ellisville State School Community Service System which not only develops the academic skills of students with MR but also teaches them vocational skills in sheltered workshops. By teaching skills such as packaging, assembly, recycling and other procedural operations, the school prepares children for gainful employment once they have left their educational institute. Even after they have left, the school supports them by helping them get employed through sponsored job applications, teaching them interviewing skills and even how to use the public transport system (ESSCSS, 2008).
