The Matrix
There is a very good reason why The Matrix has become a flag bearer of the science fiction film genre in recent Hollywood history. While the beauty of the film can be analyzed in terms of its visual, cinematography, unique camera angles, dialog and even the special effects used in the film, it is essentially the ideas presented within the movie which make it worthy. Of course the film does not lack in ideas since our understanding of reality, truth or fiction and even perceptions themselves are questioned but it is the idea of human emotions overpowering machine intelligence which stands out from amongst the rest.

This machine is represented not only by the monsters that hunt the ship the characters are placed on but also the system which Mr. Anderson is a part of within the matrix. A job which does not excite him and a work environment where he is nothing more than a cog in a machine is something which binds him within rules. As Neo, he does not have to follow the rules set down by the machine. Agents of the machine, i.e. Mr. Smith, seem to have no real emotions and the only expressions presented by them are rage, hatred and a search for putting things in order. As described by Thornton (1987) the perceptions of individuals may be quite different from the reality.

On the other hand, the human intelligence represented by characters such as Neo, Trinity and Morpheus stands out as superior to the machine intelligence used by other characters. On the surface of things, it may also appear that they behave in manners which are less than intelligent. For example, Neo and Trinity take a very risky decision to try and rescue Morpheus when he is captured by the Agents. However, that decision also turns out to be towards their benefit as that is when Neo realizes his powers are much greater than what he had thought.
